Intermountain Health Perfusionist in Provo, Utah

Job Description:

Responsible for the clinical aspects of perfusion services. Operates the equipment necessary to maintain extra-corporeal circulation during situations where it is necessary to support or temporarily replace the patient's circulatory and/or respiratory function. The Perfusionist is responsible for drug administration under the guidelines of the Physician Preference Care and/or direct MD order. The Perfusionist also completes limited point of care lab testing.

Job Essentials:

Responsible for all clinical aspects of perfusion services including:

  • Cardiopulmonary support, Hepatic bypass, Single limb perfusion, Rapid infusion systems, Centrifugal pump, LVAD, RVAD

  • Monitors and documents the anticoagulation status of the patient and medicates per established protocols. Administers and records blood products per established protocol.

  • Administers pharmacological agents via the extra-corporeal circuit per established protocols as outlined in the Physicians Preference Card.

  • Responsible for operating red cell salvages devices.

  • Provides perioperative blood product support.

  • Cleans and maintains equipment.

  • Documents all patient assessment, care delivery and technical intervention data per policy. Maintains appropriate records in compliance with JCAHO, CLIA, AMSECT and the American Board for Cardiopulmonary Perfusion recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a formal academic training program in Cardiopulmonary Perfusion (or granted 'Grandfather' status by the American Board of Cardiopulmonary Perfusionists).

  • Certification by the Board of Cardiopulmonary Perfusionists.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
