Intermountain Healthcare Advanced Practice Provider - Inpatient Palliative Care, Utah Valley in Provo, Utah

Job Description:

This advanced practice provider (APP) will join our palliative care team located at Utah Valley Hospital, in Provo, Utah. Our team provides care to patients at any stage of serious or chronic illness. The goal of palliative care is to focus on:

Quality of life

Relief of symptoms related to serious illness

Family and/or caregiver support

A team approach to patient care

Care aligned with a person’s goals

A team that collaborates with your doctors

The Palliative Care team includes a palliative care physician, two advance practice providers, a social worker, nurse and chaplain to meet patient's needs.

This APP's primary focus will be on inpatient care. Working collaboratively with care teams, the APP will round with patients and support their symptom management and advanced care planning in units throughout the hospital.

Prior experience in palliative care or a related field will help the chosen candidate be successful in this position.

Job Essentials

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are accountable for the provision of patient care at the top of licensure, within their scope of practice. Licensed, credentialed and privileged to perform such duties as:

  • Maintenance and promotion of health and prevention of disease;

  • Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, correction, and consultation;

  • Procedures as outlined by specialty, and referral for health problems;

  • Education of the patient, patient's family, clinical staff, and others;

  • Prescription or administration of prescription drugs or devices in accordance with a consultation and referral plan;

  • Consultation with other healthcare providers;

  • Appropriate and timely documentation of clinical care;

  • Continually learning and developing for optimal patient care and outcomes.

Advanced Practice Providers may also participate in research, utilize evidence-based practice to improve quality patient care, protocol development, care process model development, and best practice standards for assigned patient population throughout our organization.

Minimum Qualifications

Current state license as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA).

  • and -

Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

  • and -

Eligible for State Controlled Substance License II through V.

  • and -

Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate II through V.

  • and -

BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers.

  • and -

Other certification as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NRP).

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

  • and -

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

  • and -

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

  • and -

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

  • and -

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

  • and -

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
